Text Box: Domino Art

Text Box: After experiencing a creative lull, I pulled out a box of dominoes and found a terrific new canvas for stamps that opened a exciting new dimension and creative outlet. Be warned once you start, you will be hooked.
The techniques are simple and provide an opportunity to experiment with inks and paints. Start by lightly sanding the domino surface, sides and edges with fine sand paper, then wipe clean. If desired, drill hole either from side to side or front to back. You can also attach a bead to the top with Diamond Glaze. To create a colorful background, I like to use Lumiere paints applied with a sponge. A direct to domino technique can be used with any pigment ink stamp pad. Next step is to heat set with an embossing tool. Choose the stamp image. This is the fun part as stamps take on a new look since you are only using a small portion of the image. Using a pigment ink, I like to ink the desired area of the stamp and place the stamp with ink side up on a table and press the domino into the selected inked area of the stamp. Carefully lift up the domino from the stamp. Heat set again. Add gold highlights with a gold Krylon pen or I like to use a product called Rub ‘n Buff. You can use the direct to domino technique with a stamp pad to color the sides and edges, To protect the domino, finish by spraying with several light coats of Krylon Crystal clear in either the satin or gloss.  You can also use Mod Podge with good results.

Text Box: Other fun things to try.
-Try coloring in with the great Sharpie colors available.
-Since you are using a pigment ink, try embossing with embossing  powder.
-With a plain background, after image is stamped, use Doc Martin’s Calligraphy colors to paint the domino.
-Stamp image on tissue paper or vellum and color with chalks, pencils or paint. Collage the image onto the domino with Mod Podge.
-Turn the domino into a tiny collage canvas. Attach charms, beads and findings with Diamond Glaze. Layer with clip art and papers, then seal  with a spray finish.
-Play with gel pens, colored pencils, chalks and all types of paints.
-Use the domino to add dimension to an altered book.
-Try a domino as the body of an art doll.
-Add a tassel or embellish with fibers, ribbons and buttons.
And the best thing with dominos, if you don’t like your results you can remove with alcohol, or just sand with sandpaper. Clean domino, and your are ready to start again.
